(Food Theory Blog #4)

The company was first to launch this product that I deem is significantly innovative to the Culinary Industry today. This company is Philips. The Dutch company was founded in 1891 and is currently known for creating lighting products and lifestyle/health technology appliances. The company was founded by a father and son duo, Frederick and Gerard Philips. Inspired by the quick-evolving electricity industry back then, their first factory production was carbon-filament lightbulbs.

Over the years, the company has expanded worldwide. They commit to promoting energy efficiency sustainability. Philips marks “green” products as more environmentally sustainable compared to their close competitors. The company claims they “improve people’s lives with a steady flow of ground-breaking innovations.” I would have to agree with this statement, as the product I chose to research today is the Philips Airfryer.

In 2010, Philips introduced the Airfryer, which uses 80% less oil compared to the traditional deep frying method. It combines high temperature with turbo-speed air circulation to efficiently draw out moisture from the surface of the food. This creates a crisp exterior yet juicy and tender centre. The Airfryer can be used to cook fries, grill steak, roast lamb racks, and bake dessert, etc. Although there are so many options, as a cook, I would keep the usage to a minimum of just frying. However, this would be very useful and convenient product for a home cook. Its a great way to eat quick yet still very healthy.

Why I pronounce this product highly significant to the culinary industry, is mainly because of it’s health benefits and convenience. Nowadays, crispy foods are all the rave. However, we are also starting to pay more attention to the nutritional values of our meals to improve the quality of our health. With this new technology, we can appeal to the foodies with healthy snacks/meals without the sacrifice of texture or flavour. With quick clean, nonstick surfaces, cooking and clean up has never been easier.

Conventional fryers produce smelly oily fumes and causes a residue to build up on the rest of your kitchen appliances. With that in mind, the creators made sure to optimize the product to user-friendly as possible.

As a person who always holds back from eating unhealthy fried foods, I think this is a super clever and innovative technology. In the near future, we will begin to notice that unhealthy foods will affect our bodies in the long run if we do not start caring for it now. The earlier we start eating with more thought in mind, the longer we will be able to enjoy our lives without antibiotics and illnesses. I believe that Airfryer technology should be implemented into all kitchens soon. With such a simple and accessible concept, there is really no excuse not to have it everywhere!

Achieving the same results with up to 80% less oil, you can have amazing food in no time!
